- Aftercare is an important part of the denture journey and is included in your new denture package for 6 months after the fit date.
- It can take time for you to adapt to your new denture and for them to “settle in”. Eating and talking may seem initially difficult until your facial muscles and tongue have adapted to the change.
- You may feel quite “full in the mouth” or that there is little room for food, this will decrease in time. Eating smaller softer pieces of food can help.
- Lower dentures will always feel loose without the use of dental implants to stabilise them. Initially complete dentures can feel unstable until you have learnt to balance the lower denture and the upper denture has bedded in and achieved suction this can take time and sucking sweets may help.
- Leave your dentures in for the first 24 hours to help them settle.
- It is likely that the new dentures will cause soreness while they are settling in, if this becomes painful please do not persevere as it will create an ulcer. contact the clinic immediately and revert to your old denture, making note of where the soreness is located. Simple adjustments can make a big difference to you adapting to the denture. please always call for an appointment so I can guarantee the time to review your denture.
- Try to give your soft tissue a rest by not sleeping in your denture at night.
- Clean your denture with a regular toothbrush and paste, remembering the fitting surface (the parts that touches your gums). Also gently stimulate and clean your gums with a toothbrush.
- If you have natural teeth it is important to visit your dentist with regular “check ups”.
- If you have no remaining teeth it is still important to have annual full mouth assessment to check that your oral tissues are remaining healthy. Please contact the clinic to book a review.
- Dentures do not last forever, changes happen in the underlying bone affecting the fit and facial support, please contact the clinic if you need advice.
- After your 6 month aftercare package has expired further adjustment appointments are available at an additional cost.
- Any questions and I am always happy to help.
